Jose Marrero-Martinez

Jose Marrero was born in 1902, Las Villas, Cuba. He used an alias of Alberto Hernandez during the Machado dictatorship era in Cuba during the 1920's while he lived in Camaguey, from the age of about 18 yrs old.

While using this alias, Jose was working on a farm or ranch owned by Antonio Garcia and Josefa Gonzalez-Garriga in Camaguey, I believe it was near Moron.

When Jose's brother came from "el Central de Santa Lugarda", Mata, Las Villas (now known as Villa Clara) looking for him, and found him , that's how my g-mom found out he had a different name. She also found out he and his brothers had been "estividores de azucar" so they either worked on the shipdocks loading sugar or the train yards, not sure which one.

Nila Gonzalez-Garriga married Jose Marrero-Martinez using his real name and lived in Perea, Las Villas, Cuba for a while, which is where all five of their children were born. Nila later took their children to have them inscribed in Chambas, Camaguey, Cuba.

Tio Bertin remembers going to visit his father's family in Las Villas, he remembers the area being called Central de Santa Lugargda, near a town called Mata, in Las Villas ( now Villa Clara), Cuba. Bertin also said his mom, Nila, would use Alberto when talking to her husband, as a form of endearment, even though she knew that his real name was Jose. I asked Bertin why did his father pick the surname of Hernandez as an alias. Bertin was not sure but felt it was a family names somehow connected to his father's people or of close family friends.

Jose's family was from Las Villas ( now known as Santa Clara). so he was able to reconnect with his family but that was 10-20 yrs after the fact of using an alias.

Jose & Nila eventually seperated or divorced and both had new partners. Jose moved to Isla de la Juventud, with Aida Garcia( who was from Pinar del Rio) where they had several more children.
