Educated at the famous academy of John H. Willitts at Carpenter's Hall, Philadelphia, PA. His first introduction to commerce was in 1840when he entered the hardware house of Carr and Keim, Commerce Street. After a year, he found the business did not suit him and he became a clerk in the house of Sperry and Wright, Produce Dealers, South Walter Street. Here he remained until 1843. He became a clerk for Earp and Young, until 1847. Going out on his own, he became a partner with John D. Tustin. On the 9th of July 1863, the firm dissolved.
He married 1 Oct 1850 Catherine Clemons Backus, daughter of Frederick R. Backus, Esq. They had four children. He was a member of Protestant Episcopal Church and also a member of the Masons. In 1862, he volunteered in the the Corn Exchange Regiment.
He died at his home in Germantown, of pulmonary consumption on 28 Jan 1864. He was buried in the German Baptist Cemetery, generally known as Keyser Burial Ground.
