Joseph Nolen Boles

Joseph Nolen Boles, born December 10, 1859, was a native of Rusk County. He lived in the Concord community where he farmed and operated a small store. In 1889 he married Beulah Ellen, daughter of James Spurlock and Lavenia Wealthy (Lewis) Dennard. “Joe” and Beulah were active in community and church affairs. They were members of the Concord Baptist Church. For years Beulah made the communion wine for the church using blackberries. When Joe Boles died (April 10, 1939) his pastor, S. R. Malone, wrote his obituary. I could not find better words to described him than those of Rev. Malone. The following excerpts are from his obituary. “His name was synonymous with justice, kindness, courtesy and love for principle and righteousness—his influence in molding the lives of his children and the lives of the youth of this community will long remain to bless the world.” Beulah died July 5, 1943. Both are buried in the Concord Cemetery. Their children were Nina Lavina; Ross died young; Barham married Edna Pinkerton; Clarence Monroe married Nannie Mary Strong; Wilma Alice married Harry McNamarra; Glen Nolen “Jack” married Letha Mae McCrary and James Dennard married Fay Bunn.
