Origins

Notes:

His first wife (who probably came with him from England) and their children died. Thomas was commissioned a captain in the Lancaster militia. He remarried on May 4, 1670, to Katharine Skipwith Dale. Katharine was the eldest daughter of Major Edward Dale, son of Sir Thomas Dale, Governor of Virginia Colony, who fostered, taught and baptized Pocahontas. It is through Katharine's mother, Diana Skipwith, that our family is connected to many nobles and kings--12 Kings of France: Pepin III (first Mayor of Palace to assume the title of king), Charlemagne, Hugh Capet, Robert the Pious, Henry I, Philip I, II and III, Louis VI, VII, VIII and IX, the last two Kings of Wessex: Egbert and Ethelwolf, and 8 Kings of England: Alfred the Great, Edward the Elder, Edmund I, Edward the Peaceful, Ethelred II, the Unready, William the Conqueror and Henry I and II. These connections are told in The Descendants of Captain Thomas Carter--1652-1912, by Joseph Lyon Miller, M.D., C.J. Carrier Company, Harrisonburg, Virginia, 1997. The reference to our direct ancestor, Peter Carter III, is on page 234.
