About Joseph Chaffee

From the Chaffee Genealogy:

http://www.archive.org/stream/chaffeegenealogy01chaf/chaffeegenealo...

Joseph 2 Chaffe (Thomas i)

  • was probably born in Nantasket, Mass. (later called Hull), some time between 1639 and 1646, and
  • died in Swansea, Mass., October 28, 1694.
  • He married there, December 8, 1670, Annis, daughter of Richard Martin of Rehoboth, Mass. She died in Barrington, Mass. (formerly Swansea), probably early in March, 1729-30.

Joseph Chaffe probably moved with his parents and brother from Hull to Rehoboth between 1657 and 1660. In 1667 that part of Rehoboth where they lived, called Wannamoisett, was formed into a separate town and called Swansea. So it is in the Swansea records that we find the first mention of Joseph Chaffe, about 1670:

"Joseph Chafy his ear mark for all sorts of cattell is a slit in the upper side of the left ear and a slit in the imder side of the right ear."

February 5, 1672, an agreement made in regard to the building of a fence was signed by "Joseph Chafy" and his brother Nathaniel among others. [Ibid.]

January 22, 1673, it was agreed by the Proprietors, of whom "Joseph Chafey" and his brother were two, that "all Moable grase aJoyning to any of our Medows Belongs to the said Meadow." [Ibid.]

"At a town meeting lawfully warned on ye 12th of May 1673, . . . Joseph Chafy"and two other men were chosen "surveyors of ye highways" [76 id.] their duty being to view and repair the highways as directed by the town.

"At a Town meeting Lawfully warned May ye 22d 1674 In obedience to a warrant sent from Our Hond Govr for ye clausing of officers. . . . These Persons underwritten being Inhabitants of this Town ye day & year above written took ye oath of Fidelity before Mr. James Brown, Assistant."

"Joseph Chafy" was one of the twenty-five who signed this. [Ibid.] About 1675-6 he contributed £1, 8s. for the carrying on of King Philip's War, the brunt of which fell on Swansea, "the most exposed and the greatest sufferer by Philip's War of any of the New England settlements." [Bickney's History of Barrington.]

April 11, 1679, the Proprietors agreed on laying out "the home lots butting upon the river," "the great lots extending from the large beach that buts upon the bay or great river," and run to a highway through the Dead Swamp, also, "that lower part of the neck at the front of the said great lots that shall but upon the said lyne from the long beach, together with the little neck of land lying upon the river near Mr. Allen's meadow shall at present remain in Common." [Ibid.]

"At a Town meeting being mett upon Legal warning May ye 24th 1681 for ye choice of officers . . . Joseph Chafy" was chosen as one of three Surveyors of Highways. [Ibid.] October 3, 1682, seventeen of the Proprietors signed an agreement in confirmation of the action of the committee, "Joseph Chaffey " being one. [Ibid.] "Sixt of March Anno Dominie 1683 [1682-3] Joseph Chaffe," as executor of his father's will presented that document, made July 25, 1680, for probate. The inventory, taken May 15, 1683, was sworn to by him, "on ye oath of Joseph Chaffey." His brother Nathaniel received 39 acres of land and Joseph all the rest of his father's "lands, meadows orchards, gardens, dwelling house, barn, outhouses, living stock, neat cattle, sheep, horse kine, swine, poltery and 35 acres of land lately purchased upon the neck commonly called Phebes Neck" also all money due his father. He also became the owner of the family Bible [see Appendix A], probably taking it as part of his share in the division of the personal estate. In book two of the Rehoboth Land Records we find, that March 17, 1683-4, Richard Martin acknowledged having given to his son-in-law, Joseph Chaffee, "ffourteen pounds estate in commonage," in Rehoboth, which was given him by the will of his brother, Robert Martin. April 9, 1685, in a division of lands ordered by the town of Rehoboth, Richard and John Martin and Joseph Chaffee drew lot number 45, being 114 pounds commonage estate, and they were allowed twenty acres to the hundred pounds.

"At a Town Meeting Legally warned & ye Town being mett together Septemr 9th, 1685. . . . After this a vote passed by some particular Persons was voted that y place of all Publick meetings should be between Mr. Myles' house & y great Bridge, & a house be there built for that end by a free Contribution." Against this protested fifteen men of whom " Joseph Chafy " was one. [Swansea Records.]

"At a Town Meeting May ye 24: 1687 The Town being mett together made choice of officers for ye year ensuing as followeth . . . Joseph Chaffie " and one other were chosen Constables, [Ibid.] their duty being to assist in keeping the peace and to make arrests of disorderly persons. September 12, 1688, "Joseph Chaffee" sold to Thomas Barnes an acre of salt meadow, the original deed being in possession of the author :

"At a Town Meeting Warned and mett together according to ye order of ye Counsel at Plymouth May 28th 1689 . . . Viewers of fences Tho: Barnes, Joseph Chafy for Wannamoset," [Swansea Records] their duty being to adjust all matters of difference between contiguous owners, as to proper fences, location of boundary lines, and other matters of like nature. This year he is on record as a Proprietor, though not an inhabitant of Rehoboth. March 28, 1693, and March 27, 1694, he was again chosen for the ofhce of Fence Viewer, the last which he held. [Ibid.] He made his will, "being Sick & weake in Body" September 22, 1694, five weeks before his death. It was filed with his inventory, November 13, 1694, by his widow and two sons, and the same day they gave bond for the faithful performance of their duties in administrating the estate, their sureties being Nathaniel Chaffee, Joseph's brother, and John Ormsby, probably Annis Chaffe's brother-in-law, husband of her sister Eleanor (or El vara) or else his son John.

Annis Chaffee had no sooner recovered from the shock of her husband's death than she was called upon to bear another of a like nature, the death of her father. He died in the Spring of 1695, the signature to his will being sworn to by the witnesses thereto May 7th. By this instrument, made June 2, 1686, he left to daughter Annis one-fourth of his household goods, and after his debts had been discharged, one-third of his cattle.

"June 16th 1697. The towne [Rehoboth] met being lawfully warned and drew lots for the division of lands before agreed upon and they are drawn up as followeth. . . . Drew lots for the divisions of lands before agreed upon and Lotts drawn are as followeth. , . . Widow and John Chaffee." [Ibid.] December 27, 1703, Annis Chaffee sold to John Whitaker two lots of land in Rehoboth, as is evidenced by the following deed :
