Joseph was born circa 1642/3 in Lynn, Essex County, MA. Joseph first married Sarah SILSBEE, daughter of Henry SILSBEE & Dorothy [surname not known] and second married Mariah SMITH

• 1. HENRY COLLINS, starchmaker, aged 29, with his wife Ann, aged 30, three children and five servants, came in the ship Abigail in June, 1635. They were certified from the parish of Stepney, England. Probably this was not their home, but the place of their last sojourn in England. The servants were evidently his workmen in the business which it would seem he had been carrying on in England.
• He settled at Lynn. March 9, 1636-7, he was made freeman," which means he became a citizen of the colony, entitled to the privilege of voting and holding office in the colony. .... etc.

• .... The will of Henry Collins cannot now be found, but it is referred to in probate records. It was dated February 10, 1686, and was probated March 31, 1687. Later an agreement was made by the sons to carry out the provisions of the will, and this agreement is on file at Salem.
• Ann, the widow of Henry Collins, died September 29, 1691. Her blindness, which she mentions in the following will, explains the fact that she was unable to sign her name, but made her mark instead. .... etc.

• 2. Joseph2 Collins (Henry1) deposed in the case of Edward Richard's estate in Lynn, March 24, 1689, giving his age as "about fourty & Seaven yeares." This would make his birth fall in the year 1642 or 1643. He was mentioned in the will of his father and was one of the brothers who made an agreement regarding the lands which their father had owned and bequeathed to them, in the year 1694.
• He was a housewright, or carpenter and builder. He lived at Lynn and owned considerable land. February 20, 1721-2, he deeded land and buildings to his son Ezekiel, on condition of Ezekiel's taking care of himself and wife and paying certain sums to the other children; but March 28, 1724, they joined in a "disannulling" deed.
• He married first, Sarah ---- ; she died February 25, 1682. He married second, October, 1684, Maria Smith. He died February 4, 1734.

• Joseph Collins and his wife, Sarah, married about 1668 in Lynn.
  • Their daughter, Sarah Collins, was born on August 18, 1669. She died as an infant on September 19, 1669. Joseph Collins, Jr. was born on September 16, 1671.

  • Thomas Newhall, Robort Potter and Henery Stasi testified that they heard that Hathorne said last Christmas day at night Joseph Collins had drunk seventeen quarts of rum in his house and many there were disguised with drink. Also that Joseph Collins' wife was so drunk that she had to be carried to bed and the reason why it was "smothered up" was because Mrs. Laton had a daughter among them. Sworn in court.

• Writ: Joseph Collins and wife v. John Hathorne; slander; for saying in Salem at the last county court that last Christmas day at night plaintiff had seventeen quarts of rum drunk in his house, that many who were there were disguised with drink, and that plaintiff's wife was so drunk that she could not go to bed without being carried; dated Nov. 18, 1672; signed by John Fuller, for the court; and served by Thomas Ivorye, constable of Lin, by attachment of land of defendant's, adjoining the lower end of Mr. Whiting's lot and some back of John Hathorne's house.
  • Henry Collins was born on November 23, 1673. Ann Collins Ingalls was born on February 13, 1673/4. Dorothy Collins Gray was born on March 6, 1675. Sarah Collins Eliot Richards was born on August 10, 1678. Esther Collins was born on January 2, 1679.
• Sarah died in 1682 in Lynn. After her death, Joseph married Maria Smith. The Town Records of Lynn, record that Joseph Collins, age 42, a widower and housewright of Lynn, son of Henry Collins and Ann, married on October 15, 1684 in Lynn, Maria Smith, spinster of Ipswich, daughter of John and Elizabeth Smith.
  • Ruth Collins Graves was born October 26, 1685. Mary Collins was born January 16, 1687/88. William Collins was born January 14, 1689/90. Elizabeth Collins Graves was born December 23, 1692. Joseph Collins was born March 26, 1695. Ezekiel Collins was born February 17, 1697/98. Martha Collins Odell was born April 1, 1700.
• In 1716/17 Joseph Collins, Sr. and his brother Samuel were listed as Quakers, and had their taxes for repairing the Meeting House abated.
  • Three of the Collins children married into the Graves family. Ezekiel and Ruth married children of Sarah Brewer and Samuel Graves.

• HENRY COLLINS, Starchmaker, born in England in 1606, came from London in the Ship "Abigail" June 30, 1635, with his wife, Ann, born 1605, four children and five servants, and settled on Essex street in Lynn, Mass., where he remained until his decease, February 20. 1687, age 81 years.

• The following is taken from Newhalls' History of Lynn, Mass.:
• Page 151 — "Henry Collins was a starchmaker and lived in Essex street. He embarked in the Abigail, of London, 30 June, 1635. In 1639 he was a member of the Salem Court. He was born in 1606, and was buried 20 February 1687, at the age of 81. His wife, Ann, was born in 1605. His children were Henry, born 1630; John, born 1632; Margery, born 1633; and Joseph, born 1635, and his descendants remain."
• Page 171— "1637 — A town meeting was held this year in which Daniel Howe, Richard Walker and Henry Collins were chosen a committie to divide the lands, or as it was expressed in the records: 'To lay out ffarmes.' The land was laid out in those parts of the town best, adapted for cultivation, and the wood lands were reserved as common property, called the 'Town Common', and was not divided until sixty-nine years afterwards."
• In a list of names, about one hundred in number, recorded in the town records in the year 1638, which follows the above extract, appears the following: "Henry Collins up-land and meadow 80 acres and ten." The ten acres was a separate allotment, and was undoubtedly his village or town lot where he resided.

• of Lynn show he was a man of importance in that community, was frequently called upon to perform duties of public trust and confidence, and sometimes acted as an advocate in court trials.
• A. Chalkley Collins of Great Barrington, Mass., in a letter dated Aug. 16, 1900, says: "Henry Collins belonged to the Parish of Stepney in the eastern part of the present city of London and worshiped in the Old Parish Church at that place. This Parish Church of Stepney, dedicated to Saint Dunstan, is the oldest in East London, and one of the oldest in all London. Before Dunstan re-built the church in the tenth century there was a Saxon church there dedicated to all saints. The present church was built in the time of Edward IV, 1471-1483, a few relics of the previous church being preserved. According to the church records several of the children of Henry Collins were baptized in this church, among whom was his son John (our ancestor) at the age of eight days on January 82, 1631. Henry's place of abode is recorded in this record as Tatcliff Highway, and his business that of a starchmaker. His wife. Ann. died at Lynn, Mass., probably in 1690, as her will dated in 1690 was probated in that year."
• II. JOHN COLLINS, (second son of Henry and Ann) born in England in 1632 and lost by shipwreck at sea with his son John in 1679, married Abigail Johnson, daughter of Richard Johnson, at Lynn. Mass.. and by her had the following children, all born at Lynn, twelve of whom survived him : .... etc.
