About Joseph Dodson

From: The Dodson book His first wife was Anne (surname unknown) who was living in 1766. Itappears from deed records that sometime after that date Joseph marriedMartha "Patty" [surname unknown]. Joseph moved, probably with his father, to Fauquier Co., VA by 1751when he was named as a taxpayer, living in the Elk Run vicinity ofHamilton Parish. In 1759, his father, Thomas Dodson, Jr., gave him atract of land in Fauqier Co. adjoining Thomas Dodson, Timothy Stamps,Carter & Debut's lines. In 1765, Josph Dodson of Hamilton Parish, "forlove and goodwill towards my loving brethern and sisters of theBaptist Church", conveyed to William Stamps, deacon, "a tract of landon Barkers Branch in sd parish, being part of a tract I now live onand on which the new meeting house is already built, 1 acre" [Fauquierdeed 2-368]. The deed was witnessed by John Creel, Thomas Dodson, Jr.and James Shackelford. The foregoing transaction was probably made tothe membership of Broad Run Baptist Church which Joseph had joined inDec 1762. Joseph and Anne Dodson moved to Halifax Co. in Sept 1766 when theysold their land in Fauquier Co., 150 acres adjoining Humphrey Brookeand William Hunton [Hinton?, Hunter?] (Fauquier deed 2-609). Theysettled on Toby Creek in southwest Halifax Co. Joseph died in 1773 [wd. 12 April 1773; rec. 18 Nov 1773] in HalifaxCo. and left land to his wife (not named) and sons: "to beloved wife, the plantation I now live on during her life or widowhood" and then toson, Joseph "at death of his mother;" also 150 acres on Toby's Creekto son, Caleb, and the remainder of the tract divided equally betweensons Joshua and Elias Dodson [Halifax Wills Bk 1, p. 47]. In 1773, the year that Joseph Dodson died, Thomas Dodson [2nd Fork]and Mary his wife, and Joseph Dodson and Parry, his wife, jointlysoild 162 acres in Halifax Co. to Benjamin Edwards, "Patty" signed thedeed "Martha Dodson". This is the only indication found in recordsthat Joseph had a second wife. She was apparently the mother of theyoungest son, Joseph Jr., born in 1771. The children of Joseph Dodson were (not in order of birth): Thomas Dodson * Caleb Dodson * Joshua Dodson * Elias Dodson * Joseph Dodson, Jr. * Letty Dodson (Chaney) Rhoda Dodson (Hardy) * Nancy Ann Dodson (Petty) Elizabeth Dodson (Gardner) Mary Dodson (Lewis)
