About Joseph Furman

   Joseph and Ella were born in Pumpian, Lithuania, and were married there. They had fifteen children of whom only six survived beyond babyhood. They were Zundel, Abraham, Hillel, Henry, Woolf, Philip and Chana. Abraham was born in 1875. He served in the Russian army as a young man. Abraham was the first of the Furmansto arrive in South Africa, in 1901. He first earned a living by pushing a wheelbarrow through the steets of Cape Town selling tea and coffee. Nechama and Riese Sher lived in Sadana, Lithuania. They had six daughters, viz. Chassa, Leah, Beila, Nechama, Nessa and Sarah. Nechama left Pumpian to meet Abraham in Cape Town and they married in 1905. They had two daughters Pauline (Polly) in 1908 and Freda in 1909. They had ahd another daughter before Polly, but she died at birth.
   The family first lived at 209 Hanover Street, Cape Town, where Abraham had a shop where he manufactured and sold wooden clogs.
   In the meantime, both sets of parents left Lithuania and came to live in Cape Town. Also all their respective brothers and sisters came to live in South Africa.
   Joseph Furman earned a living in Cape Town as a shoemaker. Nechama Sher was also a shoemaker and he and Riese lived in Koeberg Road, Maitland. Both sets of parents died in Cape Town and are buried in the cemetery in Salt River.
   After living in Hanover Street for some time, the family moved to 232 Victoria Road, Woodstock, where Abraham opened another shop selling materials. He was one of the founders of the Woodstock and Salt River Hebrew Congregation in Argyle Street, Woodstock and he attended Shul there twice a day until his death in 1969.
   Freda attended the De Villiers Street School and after she left school she first worked at the OK Bazaars and as a cashier in a butcher shop, Freda remembers when she was small she got lost - an aunt and uncle lived in Wynberg, and one day she followed the Salvation Army Band trying to find her way to Wynberg. She also once walked to Adderley Street when she was very young.
   Polly married Ben Abel in 1935 but Freda only married five years later
