Joseph and Elizabeth Harter moved from Preble County, Ohio to Wabash County, Indiana in 1836. The first white settlers to Wabash County came only a year before, in 1835. According to North Manchester's The Walnut Street Messenger, January 1, 1923, Joseph erected the first grist mill in the town, commonly known as the corn cracker, in 1839. This was replaced in 1843 by a better mill. He continued in the business until 1851 when he sold his business to his 2 sons, Joseph and Jacob. He also owned considerable land at one time. In 1838 the Manchester Church of the Brethren was organized, and Joseph was chosen as its first minister. He was ordained soon after this, and remained senior elder until his death.
