JOSEPH BRYANT HAWKES Born 24 May 1799, Durham, Androscoggin, Maine or West Buxton, York, ME to Joshua HAWKES and Lucy BRYANT. He married Sophronia ALVORD 12 Dec 1822 in Cambridge, Niagra, NY. She gave birth to at least four children between 1823 and 1835 in MI and one child in 1836 in Far West, MO before she died. Joseph joined the church in Jan 1832. Sophronia probably joined at that time, also. Joseph SMITH wrote 24 Oct 1835 that Brothers HAWKES and CARPENTER, from Michigan, visited him, stayed the night and attended the meeting the next day. Joseph married Phoebe Ann BALDWIN in Dec 1837, probably at Far West, Caldwell, MO. Their first child, Amos, was born in Far West in 1838. The next two children, Adelia, born 1841, and Joseph Bryant, Jr., born 1844, were born in Nauvoo, Hancock, L. The Nauvoo Temple Endowment Register shows that he was endowed on 20 Jan 1846, as an elder in the Church. Joseph also is found in the Hancock County 1842 tax records, showing the property he owned. Joseph is next found in Garden Grove, IA where his fourth child, Seth, was born 30 Dec 1846 and died four days later. While in Garden Grove, a branch of the Church was organized. Joseph and Phoebe were among other members who signed a statement supporting the organization, sustaining Brigham Young as president of the Church, and agreeing to obey the laws of tithing and other laws of the Church. His oldest son, Amos, was baptized in Garden Grove on 6 Apr 1848. In Jan 1848, Joseph is listed as one of the high priests in the Blockhouse, IA branch, Pottawattamie County. Perhaps the names of these branches are interchangeable. Joseph's wife, Phoebe, died in the fall of I850 near Kanesville, in Pottawattamie County. This may have been in the Garden Grove area. After Phoebe died, he subsequently married Mrs. Louise BOWEN, 27 Aug 1 850; AlbinaJAlzina ALVOW, 185 5; Catherine COLE STERLING, 9 Sep 1855 (div).
