About Joseph Hayward

Story told to Helen Pearson by her mother, Jean Hayward:

Joseph Hayward was an employee at Samual Fox's steelworks in Stocksbridge. One day, he fell asleep in his office. Another employee found him sleeping and went to report his findings to Mr. Fox. "Mr. Fox, Joseph Hayward is sleeping in his office!". To which Mr. Fox replied " Joseph Hayward is more use to me asleep than most people here are when they're awake".

My grandfather, Colin Hayward, hated this story. He was mortified that a member of the family would be caught sleeping on the job. (I think it's charming!)
