Notes fro Eliza (Elizabeth) King: Earl Peeler earl747@bellsouth.net wrote on 9 April 1998:

What happened to Eliza and Reubin after 1850. My uncle ( Seymore"s son Joe Elton Holbert) says that Joseph and Eliza and family were heading west (probably going to California, caught up in gold rush fever in 1849-1850and in Missouri, Eliza came down with Cholera and died. Joseph had to burn the wagon and he returned to Henderson County, NC. Could Reubin have suffered the same fate as his mother? Joe doesn't know what happened to Reubin. ( Update: 30 November 1998). John Makeam Holbert had a son called Reuben, I believe that Reuben was in Joseph's householdvisiting when the census taker recorded him as a son of Joseph, by mistake, in the Henderson County census of 1850. Thier ages were approximately the same. Joseph Holbert was a special coroner when Saphronia Barnwell was murdered April, 1863. She was foundin bed the next morning with a gash over her left eye, breaking the skull, supposed to have beenmade with an ax... several bruises on herhead and breast and arm made with a mall. Herhusband was in the civil war at the time andshe and her three children were living alone. Children asleep in the trundle bed were unharmed. Coroners jury was Robert Russ, Samuel Fletcher, William Reese and W. Plumbee Joseph was on the committee that founded Ebenezer Baptist Church. Letter dated Hendersonville, N.C. October 26, 1893 From Joseph Holbert to his son R.H. (Robert Hampton Bigger ) Holbert. This is an interpolation of that handwritten letter that is difficult to read, and probably wasn't written by Joseph himself (it may have been written by Dailieas she was still at home) as his eyesight was failing.

Mr. R. H. HolbertHendersonville, N.C. 26 October 1893

Dear Son,

I write you this to let you know that we are all well at this time, truly hoping these few lines will come to hand and find you the same. You must not think hard of me for not writing sooner as you know that I am getting so blind that I can't see to write. I hope times are getting along better out there by now as times with us are dull. I am getting along well at present. We are all in the cornfield pulling corn except Seymour. He is working in the quarry and very busy.
All the boys have been farming this year and have made a nice chance of corn but would have more if it had not been for the water standing on it. Will was not satisfied with his corn as he has got another Corn. He was married the 25 of July to Lula Corn. I guess you have not forgotten her. I think Joe will get off before long as he is always going a courting and Seymour says that he can't find anyone to suit him.
Dailie is still home I don't know when she will leave as I guess you will be back to see all the rest off. Sue and Ellen are both well and are still at the same place where they were. John lives is his new house that he bought from Bud. Your mother has got better but not exactly well.
Well Bob I can't think of anything much to write but I would like to see you and talk with you. I would like to hear you tell about the West. Johnny is still with us going to school and learning fast. I would like to hear from Bud once more tell him to write. I would like to hear from all as often as possible and when you write all the news and tell me when to look for you home.
Have you had any frost yet. We had frost the middle of this Mo. but not and snow yet. It has been also cloudy and looking like rain. Walter Corn has got the mumps and they are using him very bad.
Well I must close for this time hoping to hear from you all soon.
                                         Your Father
                                         Joseph Holbert
                    Mr. R. H. Holbert
                    2911 N. 5st
                    Tacoma, Washington

I have in my possession a copy of the original letter.

My Notes:

R. H. Holbert, Robert Hampton Bigger Holbert was a Master Carpender, Elbert Justus (Ida Lexine Holbert Justus son)says that he has some of his tools of the trade. Robert married Minnie Case and may have married a second time. He died 14 April 1939 and his son (I don't know if there were other children) after Robert died Joe Holbert came up to Paul Randolph Holbert (Seymore's Son) after a Sunday Service at Ebenezer Church and said he didn't have a father now and could he come home with Paul and Nell Rogers Holbert and Paul took him home and later adopted him and he lived out his childhood with Paul and Nell. Joe was born 17 February 1931 and died 2 July 1964. He married and had a child. Joe also had failing eye-sight by the time he was a teenager and finally went blind. He is buried in Ebenezer Church Cemetery, Henderson County, NC.

I just received a picture (2 FEB 2000) of General Francis Marion "Bub or Bud"Holbert and his family and the commercial caption on the Front reads "Elite" name of the photographer's business and the address 1137 1/2 C Street, 1138 Railroad Street (another studio ?) Tacoma, Wash. So the mystery of why Robert was so far from home may havebeen that he was working in Tacoma and staying with General Francis Marion's family.

Joseph is growing more blind in 1893

Seymour working in the quarry in 1893, Seymour would have been 24 years old at this time.

Will is William Ransom Holbert who married Lula Corn

Dailie is still at home, she married Walter G. Corn

Sue, I don't know who he is referring to.

Ellen, Sarah Ellen Holbert married David F. Brevard

John, John Pinkney Holbert ?

Johnnie, ?

Bud, General Francis Marrion "Bub" Holbert ? (Notes EEP 31 Jan 2000) just received a photo of General Francis and his family and the is labeled on the front below the photo "Elite" 11371/2 C Street &1138 Railroad Street, TACOMA, WASH. The photo probably dates to about 1880-1885 so my conclusion is that Bud and Family was in Tacoma, WA at this time and Robert had probably come to Tacoma to do some kind of work as he was a Master Carpender;

Walter Corn, Walter Could be who Joseph was referring to. He married Dailie Holbert.
