It's been hard gathering anything on my bunch since they stayed Va and most researchers are interested in Martin Hauser of Pa or the Tn or NC branches of his or John Houser's bunch. One thing for sure, it's easier to separate my Housers in Va from Knox Co., TN since my George was the only Houser to stay in Va when the rest moved.

Excerpt from Elmer A. Houser:

Chapter 5, Joseph Houser

Acknowledgement. "Much effort has been devoted, over the years, by a number of people to researching Joseph Houser. Estelle Neihouse, Mirley Houser mabry and Lola Doom, all of Logan Co. Arkansas as well as Judith Gartner and Margaret Lee of California have contributed significantly to this research in the early to mid 1980s. See 'Houser Family' by Mirley Houser Mabry in the Journal of the Logan Co. Historical Society, 1987, pp 214-216. The research on Joseph is documented by Dale Houser in 'Houser-Chitwood Get Together,' Rapid Rabbit Copy Co. Conway, Arkansas, August 1989. It is the definitive work on 'Shoal Creek' Joseph. See Appendix B. - Bibliography. Much of our data on Joseph Houser was obtained from that book.

"As will be further explained below, the author is personally persuaded that these researchers are essentially correct in their belief that 'Shoal Creek' Joseph of Johnson Co. Arkansas had lived in Hamilton Co. Tennessee and was one of the Josephs who lived in Knox Co. Tennessee. However, it is the author's reluctant conclusion that existing information contains significant 'gaps' that make it inconclusive to careful researchers. Therefore, the information in the following section is presented in the hope that it will stimulate and support further research."

Background. "One of the difficulties encountered in researching the families of John Houser 91747-1833) and George Houser (1760-1843) is that they each gave nine of their respective thirteen children, the same names. And worse, these 'same-named' children were often about the same age. See Appendix B. - Critical Evidence of Identity and Descent. This problem is most evident here because there was no more than three years difference in the ages of the two Josephs, one the son of George and the other the son of John. However, it is believed that the younger of the two Josephs, born about 1801, was the son of George and the older Joseph, born on 22 Dec 1796, was the son of John. The superseding difficulty in researching these Josephs is that both lived in Knox Co. for only a short time, and one was in Hamilton Co. for a similarly short time, probably less than five years.

"Although no Knox Co. deeds have been found that clearly identify Joseph, a/o George, he is found in the 1830 Knox Co. census. There, he is shown with a wife aged 20-30 and a daughter and a son, both under five years of age. The wife is believed to be Nancy Anderson who married Joseph Howser (Houser) on 4 May 1826 in Knox Co. Their daughter, Hannah Manerva, born on 25 Jan 1827 has been identified through Zion Lutheran Church records. However, this Joseph is not found in the 1840 Tennessee census.

"Joseph, s/o John, married for the third time in Knox Co. and is believed to have moved to Hamilton co. Tennessee where he is found in the 1840 census, with a large family. He is not found in a 1850 census, but appeared in John Co. Arkansas about 1853. He married twice more and died on 21 Apr 1884."
