About Joseph Kaufman
The 1870 Census says Joseph Kaufmann was living in Tazewell Co, Ill. He is listed as a farmer, aged 48, who owned $9,500-worth of real estate. It also says he was born in France. His wife is listed as Magdalena, who from other records is known to be the step-mother of Peter and Fanny. This census lists children living at home as Jacob (26), August (19), Magdalena (14), all Magdalena's children from her first marriage; a Catharina is listed twice as both 19 and 20 years of age; Peter (15), Elizabeth (14), Veronica (11), Mary (9), and Joseph (4). Peter's obituary in 1925 lists a surviving sister (Fannie C. Kammerer) and half-sister (Mary). I am not sure which of the sisters listed here is Fannie, because Fannie Kammerer is listed elsewhere as being born in 1857, which would make her 13 at the July 1870 census. Not sure which of Joseph's wives bore Veronica, Elizabeth, and Catharina (with the exception of whichever of those girls may have become Fannie) because they are not listed among other sources with Magdalena Sutter's other children.
The 1860 Census of Tazewell County is dated June 22, 1860. It lists Joseph Kaufman as 32 and born in France, his wife 'Madalene" as 33 and born in Bavaria, along with children Peter (5), Jacob (14), [unable to read but doesn't look like Johann] (10), Catherine (10), Madalene (5), Elizabeth (4), August (9). Veronica should have been about 1 at this census but maybe the age in 1870 was recorded wrong and she wasn't born yet.
