Killgore 2000, Origin & History of the Ancient Name of Cillgobhar.....Kilgour (30th revision), p. 179. Identification of Joseph Kilgore's birth in Scotland was made by researchers employed by Roy E. Killgore to research the family. If Joseph indeed is the Joseph born in Markinch (located 30 kilometers due north of Edinburgh), then the traditional date of birth 1690 is in error. Parish registers containing baptisms in Scotland began to be recorded only in the late 1500s, and were common by the mid-1600s. Baptised at St. John the Baptist Church in Markinch. Identification with the Joseph Kilgore who immigrated to Maine is based on the following arguments: 1) No other Joseph Kilgour has been identified in Scotland at this time. 2) This is the first appearance of Joseph as a given name in the Kilgour families. 3) There is no subsequent record (no children, no witnessing of baptisms, no death) of a Joseph Kilgour in Scotland. [Scottish records, however, are imperfect.] 4) The overwhelming opposite to William of Orange in Fife offers a ready explanation for the immigration of Joseph to America in 1718. Roy E.
