Joseph was not married to Emma, however he did get her pregnant prior to her leaving with Clarence. The child was Leroy Joseph Lareau and raised by Clarence.
This was an interesting family to trace. After becoming pregnant, Emma left Minnesota with Joseph's younger brother, Clarence, and traveled to California and Hawaii where Leroy was raised as their child. The family in Minnesota just said "they went west and were never heard from again."
The family in Hawaii, very interested in their origins, with several family members being devout Mormons, were told only that Clarence and Emma came from "way back east on the mainland". After the connection was made, some members of the two families made contacts they had not known about before. Some old family members also remember that Leroy visited Little Falls in the late 1930's, while only about 16 years old, but most had no real idea of who he was..." just a cousin from the west coast."
Also noted: Clarence was married to a Marie Kenow and had Elwood on January 8, 1920. From the way things look, he left with Emma a year later (1921 or so) and left Elwood with Marie. Maybe that is why he was never heard from again.
