Joseph Lemon Bitner was very hard to like and to get along with. He was self centered and demanding. His first wife Mary (according to his daughters in law Laura and Nina) was the sweetest woman who ever lived. They were very poor. He was very religious and the family belonged to the Congregational Church which later merged with the United Presbyterian Church.
He lived on a mule ranch in Enid Okla before WWI. He came to Pittsburg, KS just fefore WWI. He lived with Ralls at some time. Very stubborn. He wouldn't accept rides into town but would walk. He was a big guy.
