Joseph Melott.

Joseph Melott (also written Malott), the son of Theodorus Melott and his second wife, Catherine De La Chaumette, was probably born in Prince George's County, Maryland. Although it has not been verified, some researchers believe Joseph may have been married to a woman named Sarah, possibly Sarah Harmon, and that some of the children (mostly those of his brother Peter) who were captured by Delaware Indians on the Ohio River and taken to Canada in 1780 were his.

Like his brother, Peter Melott, Joseph also leased lands which were situated along Conegocheague Creek in that portion of Frederick County, Maryland that was later formed into Washington County, Maryland in 1776.

In 1778, Joseph is listed as taking an Oath of Fidelity in Washington County, Maryland.

Although there is a Joseph Melott residing in Madison County, Kentucky in 1789, it is not known at this time whether or not this is our Joseph, son of Theodorus.

Son of Theodorus Malott and his second wife, Catherine De La Chaumette, probably born in Prince George's County, Maryland. Although it is not been verified, some researchers believe that this Joseph may have been married to a woman named Sarah, possibly Sarah Harmon, and that some of the children who were captured by the Delaware Indians on the Ohio River and taken to Canada in 1780 were his. I believe that at least one of these children, Theodorus Melott, is surely one of Joseph's as he named his first daughter Sarah and his first son Joseph, and the Harmon name has been used by his descendants for several generations. Like his brother, Peter Melott, Joseph also leased lands which were situated along Conegcheaque Creek in that portion of Frederick County, Maryland that was later formed into Washington County, Maryland in 1776. Two years later, in 1778, Joseph is listed as taking an Oath of Fidelity in Washington County, Maryland. Although there is a Joseph Melott residing in Madison County, Kentucky in 1789, it is not known at this time whether or not this is our Joseph Melott, son of Theodorus.

I have a 1765 land record Dorchester County MD land record stating that Joseph was born in 1744. (Cynthia Rush, Sep 2017)* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Feb 10 2022, 6:32:44 UTC
