The word "journeyed" is well used for the trip occupied fourteen weeks. He came with a "colony," most of which settled near Merivale. In this "colony" were the pioneer members of different families: Nesbitts, Greers, Langs, Craigs, the Davidsons, Clarkes — descendants of whom persist to the present day. With Joseph Mulligan came his widowed mother; and later Grandma Mulligan used to tell Joseph's children and others how she spent nearly three months baking oatcakes and othernon-perishables for use on the journey. In those days ship-passengers, intended as colonists, had to feed themselves. Consequently, the journey for the new homemakers was much harder because of the large amount of food they had to carry.
Anyway, the little band of settlers arrived safely into the Merivaledistrict, along a blazed path from Bytown to their destination. Mulligan, like the others, entered on a bush site; and it was the old storyof a log shack and hard work. Into the drab story of the bush farms, however, came a bit of romance. From County Down, two years later cameMiss Elizabeth Patterson to stay with her sister, Mrs. John Clark, who had come from the same part of County Down. Young Mr. Mulligan foundthis young lady fair to look upon and it was not long before they were married. <ref>Hello Nepean; Author: Sara B Craig, Published by authority of Merivale Pioneer Historians, 1974; Pg. 73.</ref>
