When his father died in 1718, Joseph received bequests of, "Forty-five (45) acres of land... where his house now standeth, thirty and four (34) acres of land... in the upper division, which he formerly made use of, thirty (30) acres of land lying at the head of the Great Pond in Weymouth," and a third part of a tract of land containing 60 acres in Weymouth. He left his wife, Hannah "twenty (20) pounds per year in bills of credit of the old tenor or other passable money equal to it, and one cow and all the household stuff and goods she brought to me when I married her that is not then worn out." He named his sons Joseph, Alexander, Job, and Moses, and provided that his daughter, Katherine (see below), be provided for by his sons out of his estate for so long as she shall live. [27]
