"Joseph Montgomery Quiggle, son of John Quiggle, was born in Clinton county, Pennsylvania in 1817. He received a good, common school education, which formed an excellent foundation for his subsequent business career. He was general merchant at Chatham's Run, and was extensively interested in a line of packet boats on the canal between Lock Haven and the eastern cities. He formed a business association with Benjamin Meyers and George Berry, in the lumber line, transacting business under the firm name of Meyers, Berry & Company. They operated three mills, the middle one at Lock Haven, being under the direct supervision of Mr. Quiggle. He had accumulated a comfortable fortune, but the great flood of 1865 broke the booms and millions of logs were swept to sea, involving the loss of the entire fortune of Mr. Quiggle. He took an active interest in the public affairs of the community, and was at one time deputy-sheriff of Clinton county. He was a member and regular attendant at the Presbyterian church, and was connected with the following organizations: Lock Haven Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. He married Margaret Rich, born in Clinton county, Pennsylvania, daughter of John Rich, a native of Berkshire, England. He emigrated to America and settled in Clinton county, where he established a woolen mill at Woolrich. This was a large and profitable undertaking. He was the grandson of Stiles Rich, who married a niece of Napoleon. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Quiggle were: 1. Rachel, window of John W. Weeks, resides at Sunbury, Pennsylvania. She has had children: John D., a prominent citizen of Northumberland county; Charles and Margaret, both deceased. 2. Josephine, resides at Sunbury with her sister. 3. John Rich, see forward. 4. Joseph died in infancy."
