About Joseph Scales

He received a land grant in 1752 in Rockingham County, N.C., North of the Dan River eight miles above Wentworth.

Joseph was the first Scales to settle in Rockingham County, NC. and was a very wealthy planter. He owned 1800 acres. He had 8 sons, all either fought in the Revolution or supported and helped the cause.

When Joseph wrote his Will, the homeplace, including 200 acres, a slave and a still were left to his wife with a provision that his "beloved son" Nathaniel inherit it upon Marys death. This meant that Nathaniel should take care of his mother.

Children of Joseph and Mary Fox: 1) John, 1736-1818, who married Lydia Jane McLaren, 1717-1777 2) Thomas (d.1819) married Fanny unknown 3) David (1738-1819) 4) Anne md. unknown Hill 5) Mary md. unknown Rice These sons were given only 5 shillings in Josephs' Will, presumably because they already were landowners. Daughters, Anne and Mary are mentioned by (married) name, in the same item, and given 5 shillings sterling each. Josephs' sons by Mary Gibson, (Henry Gibson, James, Nathaniel, Robert) received grants of land.

Nathaniel Scales (1758-1845) married Mary France (1762-1828). They had a son, Pater Scales (1790-1863) who married Ann Meriwether Minor (1803-1872).

The following info is from researcher Carole Myers: This Joseph was married twice. The first wife was possibly Mary Fox. (no proof) Five of their children were named in his Will were of this marriage; John, Thomas, David, Anne and Mary.

Circa 1745 he married Mary Gibson. It is unknown if this was her maiden name or married name. The son Henry Scales aka Henry Gibson Scales named in the Will was born to her in 1743. If he was born out of wedlock, one possibilty is that Joseph Scales Sr. was his father. The others born to Joseph Sr. and second wife, Mary were: Joseph Jr.(ca.1650-1796) James (ca.1754-1833) Nathaniel (ca.1756-1824) Sarah Hannah Agnes Robert Betsy
