They had eleven children and eventually relocated to New Hampshire. In July, 1770 he came to Pond Town, Maine and settled on Lot 65. The following year he sent for his wife and nine of his children in New Hampshire. He was one of the many signers of a petition to the Crown for incorporation of Pond Town to become a town and the petition was granted on April 26, 1771. Pond Town was given the name of Winthrop in honour of the Winthrop family of Massachusetts. At the age of 55, Joseph Stevens left his family and home to serve in the Revolutionary War along with his son, Abel. Joseph returned to Winthrop after the War, but his son had been killed in action in Massachusetts. He belonged to the Congregational Church of Winthrop. Repos dans la paix, patriote courageux~
