Joseph Tacke Passes Here Sunday Evening

Joseph J. Tacke, 86, a resident of Chouteau county for 56 years, died Sunday evening at the St. Clare hospital here.

Requiem mass this Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception church. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.

Mr. Tacke was born Sept. 26, 1883, at Salem, S. D. He moved to Munster, Texas, with his folks in 1894. At the age of 17 his father sent him to Cottonwood, Idaho, to purchase a farm He traveled by train to Denver and Raparia, Wash., from where he took a boat to Lewiston, Idaho. The rest of the trip to Cottonwood was made by stagecoach. The farm he bought is still operated by his youngest brother, Frank. His early years in Idaho were spent helping freight out of Stites and drilling wells.

He married Rose Mary Toennis June 2, 1908, at Cottonwood. They moved to Montana in 1913. Mr. Tacke arriving by immigrant car on Oct. 26, and Mrs. Tacke and three children came about six weeks later. They homesteaded in the Goosebill section north of Carter. They lived on the ranch for some 43 years, retiring from the ranch in 1956 and have resided in Fort Benton since.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; two sons, George and Arnold Tacke, Fort Benton; two daughters, Mrs. Leona Harnish, and Mrs. Florence Higgins, Great Falls; a brother, Frank Tacke, Cottonwood; five sisters, Mrs. Annie Harman, Ovando, Nev.; Mrs. Christina Funk, Clarkston, Wash.; Mary Tacke, Spokane; Mrs. Elizabeth Baune, Grangeville, Idaho; and Mrs. Gertrude Sudkamp, Cottonwood; 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Two sons, Leo and Walter Tacke preceded him in death.

He was a member of the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and of the Immaculate Conception church.
