Joseph Thorogood

Joseph had 5 children (Letitia, Thomas, Edith, John, and Elizabeth) to Mary before 24Oct.1828 when he was sentenced to death at Bedford Court, for sheep stealing. Commuted to be transported for life to Van Diemen's Land on 27Oct.1828. He was on a prison hulk awaiting transportation from 6 May,1829. He sailed from the Downs in the "Bussorah Merchant" on 6 Oct.1829 (one of 200 convicts) to arrive at Hobart Town on 18 Jan.1830 and assigned to Archibald McDowall, settler on Clyde River, Bothwell, Van Diemen's Land. His wife and children arrived as Free Settlers at Hobart Town on the barque "Frances Charlotte" in 1833. He received his Conditional Pardon on 24 May 1842, and this was extended to include all of the Australian Colonies on 2 Sep.1845. He built a small brick house in Bothwell for the family. Some time around 1846/47 the Thorogood, Mawson, Betts, and Baker families went across Bass Strait to Indented Heads in Port Phillip Bay, before getting to Geelong West region. Joseph died at his son's house at Murroon, Victoria and buried at the Whoorel Cemetery, near Birregurra, Victoria.
