    • The earliest origins of the Tucker Family remain obscure. Very little of substance is known of the life of Joseph Tucker, the most remote known ancestor of this line (source for parentage called to question here).
    • Regarding his personal character and meritorious life we do have the testimony of the missionary priest Dunand. Joseph Tucker's wife, Frances Drury, was a native of St. Mary's County, Maryland, but a search of available records turned up very few references to Tuckers. A Mary Tucker was a member of the congregation at St. Inigoes, Maryland about 1769, but nothing more is known about her. Inasmuch as one or two of the children of Joseph Tucker were born in Virginia, it may well be that he was a native of that colony. Further, his extreme fervor for religion has been interpreted by some as the sign of a convert.
    • The move to Kentucky was probably made about 1785, as son James, born ca 1784 gave Maryland as his birthplace, while son William, born ca 1786 gave his as Kentucky. The Joseph Tucker under consideration was probably identical with the individual of the same name who was paid by the estate of Col. Isaac Fox of Nelson County, Kentucky, 8 October 1788 for making shoes. The 1793 tax list of Nelson County, Kentucky counted Joseph Tucker with 15 cattle, 5 horses and 250 A. The 1795 enumeration indicated that the 250 A. was originally entered by George Fendley and lay on Pottenger's Creek.
    • The Tuckers were one of the first families to follow the (Isadore) Moores to the Sainte Genevieve District, some of them arriving in June 1801. Joseph Tucker and his sons Peter and Michael were successful in obtaining grants of 640 A each.(640 acres=one section=1 mile square) The Tucker sons and their issue were so numerous by the time of Father Dunand, that the settlement in The Barrens was frequently referred to as the Tucker Settlement. Maes, in Life of Reverend Charles Nerinckx (1880) refers to it as a settlement of 60 families south of St. Louis, at the time of Dunand's visits.

This cemetery was also the site of the St. Mary's of the Barrens Church from 1807 until 1837 when most of the tombstones were moved to the new Mount Hope Cemetery. Note: from Perry Co. Republic, 2 December 1975, by Tim O'Rourke: "It is not generally known that the early settlement at the Barrens in central Perry Co. was known far and wide as the Tucker Settlement. The Tuckers were not the first Catholic family to come to the Barrens, but they were certainly the most numerous. The patriarch of the family was Joseph Tucker who was born perhaps in early 1740 and who lived until the early summer of 1816... He most likely came to Perry Co. , originally from St. Mary's Co., Maryland. He was listed in the parish censuses of St. Inigoes Church at Newtown Manor in 1768 and 1769. Nothing is known of his parentage, but inasmuch as only heads of families were listed in the parish census, the Mary Tucker who was listed before him in 1768 may very well have been his widowed mother. No pattern emerges from the scattered Co. records regarding individuals of the Tucker surname, and inasmuch as the surname was much more common in adjacent Virginia, his father may well have hailed from there. "

1744 or 1752, St. Marys Co., Maryland : Alternate birth dates and place.

...from " Catholic Families of Southern Maryland," O'Rourke, p. 38 :Census of St. Inigoes Parish, St. Mary's Co., Maryl and in 1768, included Joseph TUCKER, with the name Mary TUCKER, following it. Could she be Joseph's mother

  • In the same list are the following Drury's: Mary, Matthew, and Thomas.

in 1769 : Joseph TUCKER, Mary TUCKER, Ann DRURY, Elizabeth DRURY, Ellen DRURY, Francis DRURY, James DRURY, John DRURY , John DRURY, Jr., Joseph DRURY, Matthew DRURY, Mrs. DRURY, Susan DRURY, and Teresa DRURY.

1785. O'Rourke concluded that Joseph Tucker, Catholic, was in Nelson County, Kentucky in 1785. He shows son James bor n ca 1784, Maryland and son William born 1786, Kentucky. Soon after son James was born 1784 in Maryland, tax records d o show that Joseph was a resident of Nelson County, Kentucky. He is listed each year in the published 1785 - 1796 Nelso n County tax records. During those tax years, sons' Peter, Thomas and Joseph, Jr., are listed as they reach the taxabl e age. During the same years, two unidentified Tuckers, John and George, were also in Nelson County, However, they wer e not living in the same tax district as Joseph.

By 1802, Joseph Tucker, Catholic, was in Spanish Louisiana in the District of St. Genevieve. From O'Rourke, page 2: Whe n Isidore Moore [first Catholic settler and from Washington County, Kentucky] finally arrived at the Barrens 9 Februar y 1801. . . "old Mr. Joseph Tucker and some of his sons, came to see us the June following, while the rest [Tuckers] wi th the families and property, remained in Illinois; but they all came here again (in the) fall."

It was generally known far and wide that the early settlement at the Barrens in central Perry County was know as the Tucker Settlement. They weren't the first catholic family to come to the Barrens, but they were the most numerous. The patriarch was Joseph. In the Land Records Catholic Joseph Tucker was known as "short Tuckers" All of the early Catholic families came from the counties of Charles or St. Mary's in Maryland. Joseph was listed in the parish census of St. Inigoes Church at Newton Manor in 1768 and 1769. Only heads of families were listed. Prior to his listing Mary Tucker was listed as head of the household and could be his mother. However, the name of Tucker was more common in Virginia. His father could be from there.
