Brief chronological history of Joseph Hyrum Pugmire & Eleanor Creighton & Martha Ashworth.

  • 1833 Joseph was born at Liverpool, Lancashire, England to Jonathan Pugmire Sr & Elizabeth Barnes (5th child) - Jonathan Sr & Betsy had 10 children, 9 born in England and the 10th in Iowa. The family joined the church and attended the Liverpool Branch.
  • 1844 Joseph Travelled to US on the ship Isaac Allerton as an 11 year old with his family. The ship landed in New Orleans and travelled up the Mississippi, landing in Nauvoo April 5, 1844. The family was in Nauvoo when the prophet Joseph Smith was killed (2 months after their arrival).
  • 1845 Jonathan Sr moved his family across the river to Montrose, Iowa because of the severe persecution in Nauvoo. Jonathan Jr (Joseph's brother) went to St. Louis to help with outfitting to go west and then returned to Nauvoo.
  • 1846 The family left from Nauvoo bound for the Salt Lake Valley. Joseph was baptized en route from Montrose/Nauvoo to Winter Quarters/Council Bluffs (across Iowa) (13 year old). Joseph's mother, Elizabeth Barnes, died on the 2nd half of the trip, en route from Winter Quarters to Salt Lake. She died at Florence, Douglas, Nebraska.
  • 1847 (Sep) the Jonathan Sr family (Jonathan and his 5 children) arrived in Salt Lake with the Captain Edward Hunter's company (along with John Taylor and George Q. Cannon). (Joseph 14)
  • 1850 Joseph went to Parowan, Southern Utah (about 50 miles from the Arizona border) with his father's family to settle Southern Utah (18 years old). The 1850 census for Iron Co., Utah lists Jonathan Pugmire, age 51, blacksmith and son Joseph, age 18, both born England.
  • 1851-1855 Joseph Lived in Parowan, met and married Elenor Creighton in 1855 (family tradition, no records available). They had 11 children. Utah Territory (civil records) and parowan ward records not early enough (Parowan ward records begin in 1861).
  • 1856-1859 Joseph and Eleanor moved south several miles to Cedar City where 2 children were born Joseph Hyrum Jr (died 1859) & Sarah. Joseph received his 1st patriarchal blessing, 2nd one in 1870. Cedar City ward records begin in 1875 after the family had already left the area.
  • 1860-1870 Joseph and Elenor moved north to Fillmore (half way between Cedar City and Salt Lake) where 5 children were born: John, William, Jonathan, Justin, and Elizabeth. In the 1860 census, Millard Co., Utah "Joseph H. Pugmire, age 26, bir Eng and Elenor, age 22, bir Ire, 1 child, Sarah, age 2" (1st child, Joseph Jr had died the year before). The Fillmore Ward records record one event for the family, a son Jonathan born in 1863. Joseph & Elenor travelled to Salt lake and received their endowments and were sealed in the endowment house in Salt Lake City on 5 Oct 1867.
  • 1870 The family Moved to St. Charles (NW side of Bear Lake), Bear Lake, Idaho where his brother Jonathan Jr lived (Jonathan Jr had moved from Salt Lake to St Charles in 1864). In 1870, Joseph recieved a 2nd patriarchal bless in St. Charles. In the 1870 census, St Charles, Rich Co., Utah, "Joseph H. Pugmire, age 37, farmer, bir Eng and Eleanor, age 34, born Ire; children Sarah J - 10, William L - 8, Jonathan - 6, Justin - 4, Elizabeth - 1, and Elizabeth Keetch - age 1. In 1876, Joseph's father, Jonathan Sr died in Salt Lake City and was buried in the Salt lake City cemetery. The St. Charles early ward records have no entries for Joseph or his family.
  • 1871-1874 The family moved to Evanston (50 miles SE of Bear Lake), Uinta, Wyoming where Samuel and Josephine were born. The Evanston ward records have no entries for the Pugmire family.
  • 1875-1880 The family moved 15 miles north to Randolph (half way between Evanston and Bear Lake on the Bear River), Rich, Utah where the last two children, Allen and George were born. In the 1880 census, Rich Co., Utah, "Joseph Pugmire, age 46, both he and his parents bir Eng, and Ellinor, age 43, both she and her parents birth in Ire. The Randolph ward records begin in 1889, after the family has left the area.
  • 1881-1883 The family moved 10 miles north to Laketown (south end of Bear Lake), Utah. Eleanor died in 1881 and Joseph married Martha Ashworth in 1882 (they had 7 children). The Laketown Ward records reflect one entry, a son, Jonathan, born in 1864.
  • 1883-4 Joseph & Martha and their family moved 30 miles north to Paris, Idaho (just north of Bear Lake) where Joseph Jr was born. The Paris Ward records do not have any entries on Joseph's family.
  • 1884-1885 The family moved back to Laketown, Utah (south end of Bear Lake)
  • 1885-1894 The family moved about 10 miles to closeby Fish Haven (west side of the Lake), Idaho where the remaining 6 children of Joseph and martha were born - Edmund, James, Burton, Jesse, Raymond and Alice. The Fish Haven ward has entensive entries on both Joseph and Eleanor's 11 children and Joseph and Martha's 7 children.
  • 1906, Joseph passed away at Salem, Fremont, Idaho and was buried in November at Rexburg (100 miles north of Bear Lake), Madison, Idaho. The Rexburg ward has a summary of the life of Joseph and information on Joseph and Martha's 7 children. Martha died in 1955 at Montpelier (north end of Bear Lake), Bear Lake, Idaho.
