About Josephus Brockway
Josephus Brockway, son of Rev. John Brockway (1761-1799) and Eunice Cooper (1764 - ), was b. in Surry, NH, on Feb 25,1795; he d. in Troy, NY in 1879. He was a silversmith, a partner fro 1815-1817 with Orrin Stowell in Middlebury, Vt. (as Stowell and Brockway). From 1817-1824 a silversmith in Middlebury from a shop and, from 1824 to 1840 as a silversmith and dentist in Troy,NY. He worked primarily as a dentist in Troy, while continuing his silversmithing. In 1829 the Troy directory listed him as dentist; the 1832 lists both professions.He registered a 'maker's mark' as well as holding a patent for manufacturing silver spoons.
