Elsie Johnson Ayres' Highland Pioneer Sketches & Family Genealogies [use with caution], p. 221, says:

"Joshua, son of Joel Brown, married Jeanetta, daughter of Rev. Daniel Inskeep. They were the parents of a large family including Jennie (Mrs. George Barrere, Jr.) [ERROR explained below], James, 1842-1913, who served in the Civil War, William E., also a volunteer in the Union Army, Sallie (Mrs. W.T. Roush), Mary, 1849-1931, Joel H., member of the 168th Reg., Susan (Mrs. Marion Britton), John C., and the eldest daughter, Rachel, 1837-1885, who became the wife of Jonah Britton."

ERROR: Elsie Johnson Ayres' Highland Pioneer Sketches & Family Genealogies, p. 221, says Joshua Brown had a daughter Jennie who was Mrs. George Barrere, Jr. It is true that George Barrere Jr. married (the first of his two wives) Mary J. Brown, so that much would make sense if one ignored other facts. The Mary J. Brown he married is the subject of this F.A.G. memorial -- the one who died in 1869 at age 28-6-21 and was born 1840 (see McBrides' cemetery book, 1972 edition, p. 202). A child born in 1840 would be about 10 years old in the 1850 census. If one looks at Joshua Brown's household in the 1850 census, he has a 1-year-old child named Mary but no 10-year-old child named Mary. If one looks, however, at the household of Joshua Brown's older brother Elgar Brown in the 1850 census, one sees a 10-year-old child named Mary Brown -- surely the one who married George Barrere Jr. The conclusion is inescapable that Elsie Johnson Ayres attributed the Mary J. Brown born 1840 (Elsie called her Jennie) to the wrong father.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jan 1 2023, 18:23:28 UTC
