Joshua Carle was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Jefferson County, Ohio, with his family at the age of 5. He was raised by his father Ephraim Taylor Carle and mother, Nancy Clarke Carle, on a farm on Salt Run, not far from Smithfield.
He married Margaret Oliver in January, 1824, in Jefferson County, and together they had 13 children; ten of them lived to adulthood.
He dedicated his life to Christianity in 1829, and was very actively involved with Alexander Campbell, the founder of the Disciples of Christ denomination. He began to preach and organized a church at Warrenton and another at Smithfield before moving to Trumbull County, Ohio, around 1839, after the death of his father.
He remained active in preaching and founding churches during his 16 years in Trumbull County. He then moved his family to McLean County, Illinois, and a year later on to DeWitt County, Illinois, where he farmed the rest of his life.
He was a respected elder of the community of Wapella when he died in his 82nd year.
