The Will of Josiah Barker
In the name of God, Amen. I Josiah Barker of the County of Surry and Parish of Southwark, being of perfect mind and memory of calling to mind & duly considering the uncertainty of mans life make this my last Will and Testament. First and principally I commit my soul into the hand of the Blessed Maker trusting in his mercy & and in the merits of my Dear Redeemer for the remission of all my sins, my body I commit to the earth to be buried in such a manner as my executor after named shall think fit & proper & as to my small temporal estate I bequest & dispose of in the following manner.
Imprimis: I give and bequeath unto John Barker & his heirs forever the plantation whereon he now dwells containing one hundred & fifty acres more or less known by the bounds of the deed.
Item: I give & bequeath unto my son Arthur Barker the plantation whereon he now dwells to him & his heirs forever, containing one hundred acres more or less known by the bounds of his deed.
Item: I give & bequeath to my son River Barker the use of the land whereon he formerly dwelt enduring his life & then to his son William & his heirs forever. Containing one hundred acres more or less, known by the bounds of his deed.
Item: I give & bequeath to my son Lamuel Barker the plantation whereon I dwell & all the land belonging to me from the Reedy Branch to John Barker line, with the provisor that he will pay unto his sister Faithy Barker the sum of twenty pounds current money of Virginia. Sarah Faithy and Mary Ellis twenty shillings a piece& then the said land to the said Lamuel Barker, but in the case the said Lamuel should die without heir of his body, then the said land & plantation to Faithy Barker & her heirs of her body forever.
Item: I give & bequeath unto my dear loving wife, Faithy Barker, one bed & furniture thereto belonging & a side saddle & a chest to be at her disposing. I also leave to my beloved wife the use of all my chattels & goods during her widowhood & at her death or marriage one half to Grace Barker & the other half to Lamuel Barker.
I also leave and appoint my two sons John Barker and Lamuel my hole and sole exors of this my last will and testament to be truly performed according to the intent & meaning thereof.
Witness my hand and seal this 23rd day of February 1760.

At a court held for Surry County Virginia March 17, 1761; the within written last will and testament of Josiah Barker, deceased, was presented in court by John Barker one of the executors therein named who made oath thereof according to law & the same was provided by Philip Reekes and Benjamin Emrey two witnesses thereto & by the court ordered to be recorded and on motion of the said executors Certificates granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
