About Josiah Hiner Siple

Josiah, born in 1838, was the son of Joel and Mary Magdalene Siple.....not Joel and his 2nd wife, Catherine Conrad Siple. His birth date confirms this.

Josiah, a veteran of the Civil War, was on the muster rolls of Co. F25th VA INFANTRY, Co, F 62nd Volunteer Mounted Infantry. the 25th was involved in engagements in Front Royal on May 22, 1862, Winchester on May 25, 1862, Manassas on Aug 29, 1862, Cold Harbor, The Wilderness, Fredericksburg, Gettsyburg June 1-3 1864,and Brandy Station in Culpeper County on June 10, 1864 . Appomattox , April 4, 1864.

On June 4, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness, in Spottsylvania Co. Pvt. Charles Wilson of Co.I 18th Mass. sent a bullet "bustling" by Josiah who instantly returned fire, killing Pvt. Wilson who was the Union's first infantry fatality in the battle.

Josiah fought at Gettysburg July 2, 1864, taking Benner's Hill and Culp's July 4th Seminary Ridge.

He was imprisoned at Camp Chase, a Federal Prison in Ohio,

Josiah H Siple Passes Away

"Josiah H. Siple prominent farmer and stockman and one of Pendleton County's oldest citizens, died at eight o'clock Monday night at the home of his son, T. P. Siple at Oak Flat. He was the oldest surviving Confederate veteran in the county. Born in Highland County, he was a son of Joel and Catherine Hiner Siple. He moved from Doe Hill to Pendleton County a half a century ago. His first wife, who was Miss Wagner, died while he was serving in the war. His second wife, who was Miss Rachel Beaver, of Mount Solon, VA, died eighteen years ago."

Note: this article lists Josiah's mother as 'Catherine' rather than 'Mary Magdalene'. The reason for that is not known.
