About Jotham Sherman

Jotham Sherman b: 27 Feb 1733 He served 18 days in Aug 1757 in Capt. John Barnum's Co., Fort William Henry alarm. (FDS - 2777) served in French & Indian War.

Jotham Sherman was born in 1734, married around 1757, and settled in Newtown, CT., building and always living in his home on Queen Street, on land formerly owned by his father, near the present residence of his grandson Cyrus Beers Sherman. He was a man of positive character, having the characteristics of the old Sherman families such as laconic speech - of few words, but expressive and to the point - and stern integrity. He was a life-long member of the Trinity Episcopal church in Newtown, and for many years the chorister. His four wives all are buried by his side in Newtown.

Evidently Jotham, Justin's only brother, did not have as radical Loyalist convictions as did Justin, though he too was a pillar in the Episcopal church. He lived in peace and prosperity to a ripe old age and passed on a go ally estate to his children.

"Newtown August 25 1777 Personally appeared and took the oath of fidelity before me, Jabez Botsford Justice of the Peace" — "Caleb Baldwin Junr, the Town Clerk."

A noble example of one of Newtown's foremost men, who always dared to lead where any dared to follow. Draw on our imagination all we will, who of us, at this distant day, can realize the dignity, the solemnity, of the scene when the first little band of eight freemen stood before the gallant leader they had in the Town Clerk, and with uplifted hand, swore before the ever living God to uphold, and defend if need be with their lives, the cause espoused as set forth in the Declaration of Independence.
