About Juan Jose Sánchez y Castillo
Information by Joseph H. Sanchez, 3rd great grandson
Was elected to the first territorial government and represented the County of Valencia New Mexico. Was a well known wealthy rancher from the area known as Valencia. He was the first of our Sanchez family to move from Atrisco into the family rancho in Valencia, New Mexico. On the rancho he built a chapel in honor of San Jose the patron saint of the family and left the future upkeep of this chapel to his heirs. In 1908 his grandson Ubaldo Isador Sanchez, the heir to the family rancho would rebuild a new chapel to replace the destroyed chapel his grandfather had built. The rancho had 250 head of cattle and 1,200 sheep, along with fruit orchards and a natural spring on the property.
