About Judge Armistead Henry Churchill
Judge Armistead Henry Churchill (Transylvania Law 1816), eldest son of Henry (1768-1842) and Penelope Pope Churchill (1769-1821), was born on October 19, 1796, near Louisville. He studied law in Lexington, Ky. in the office of his uncle, Gov. John Pope (1770-1845). He was an attorney in Elizabethtown, Ky. where he was circuit court judge, 1833-47. He was appointed as one of the original trustees of Elizabethtown in 1794, and was elected to the Kentucky Senate in 1832. He contributed the land and most of the funds used in building in 1850, Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabethtown, where he sometimes conducted services.
He married (1) in 1818, Elizabeth Crutcher (1798-1833), daughter of Major James (1767-1847) and Gilly Slaughter Crutcher (1773-1854), of Elizabethtown. Their daughters were Penelope Pope (1819-48) and Malvina Churchill (1821-97). Major James Crutcher was an original trustee of Elizabethtown in 1794, served in the Kentucky House in 1815, and Senate, 1817-22, 1824-28, was judge of the Quarter Session Court and assistant judge of the Hardin Circuit Court. He served in the War of 1812 at the battle of New Orleans in 1815, where he was aide to General John Thomas, commander of the Kentucky troops.
Judge Churchill married (2) in 1835, Maria H. Sneed (1801-c45), daughter of Achilles (-c1825) and Sally Stewart Sneed, of Frankfort, Ky. Her father was for many years clerk of the Kentucky Court of Appeals. Their children were Emily Mariah (1837-70), Elizabeth Julia (1840-62) and Armistead Henry Churchill Jr. (1844-c48).
In 1847, Judge Churchill married (3) Mary Ellen Lancaster (1802-50), daughter of John (1766-1838) and Catherine Miles Lancaster (1772-1847), of Viney Level, Marion County, Ky. She had been a nun and was a sister of Judge William D. Lancaster (1814-90) who had married Judge Churchill's daughter, Malvina Churchill (1821-97). Their daughter was Mary Elleanor Churchill (1848-1919). Judge Churchill married (4) in 1851, Anna Maria Sthreshly (c1812-c88).
Penelope Pope Churchill (1819-48) lived in Henderson, Ky. and married in 1845, Thomas N. Eastin. They had one son, Episcopal minister Rev. Churchill Worden Eastin (1847-1928) who last lived in Sewanee, Tenn.
Judge Churchill died March 22, 1880. His (1) wife, Elizabeth Crutcher, died on September 15, 1833. His (2) wife, Maria Sneed, died c1845. His (3) wife, Mary Ellen Lancaster, died in 1850. His (4) wife, Anna Maria Sthreshly, died c1888. They were all interred along with several of their children in the private cemetery on the Churchill estate. When the estate was subdivided the remains supposedly were removed to the Elizabethtown City Cemetery. If the remains were not actually removed, the cemetery is located at about 206 Churchill Court, Elizabethtown.
