Judge John Cadwalder Ringgold was born 15 Nov 1794 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD. He was s/o Congressman General Samuel Ringgold I & Maries Cadwalder.

He married Elizabeth L. Sprigg 24 Jun 1821 in Randolph Co., IL. They had the following: Lucretia Elizabeth; Sophia A; Adelaide Louise: Laura J.; Frances Berkley and John Jenifer Ringgold.

He arrived in Batesville in the late 1820s and built a brick home on lower Main Street. The new home attracted many visitors from all parts of the state, with its spacious, grass-covered lawn, across the front of which was a row of huge elms. It contained six rooms, two large halls, and a porch extending the entire width of the building across the back. At each end was built a wing, the west wing being used by Ringgold as his private office and the east wing was usedby the overseer of the slaves.

He was elected as the Independence County representative to the state constitutional convention which met in early 1836. He served as an Independence County Judge and was President of the Bank of Batesville.

He died 15 Jun 1857 in Batesville, Independence Co., AR. He was buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Batesville, Independence Co., AR. Some of the graves were built over top of when downtown Batesville was built without realizing it. So the monument in the cemetery is a memorial to him for he was buried in this cemetery and his grave was built over top of.

His brother Maj. Samuel Ringgold II was killed at the Battle of Palo Alto in the Mexican War. He was also brother ro Rear-Admiral Cadwalder Ringgold.
