About Julia Ann Shepherd

Julia Ann Shepherd was the daughter of Samuel Shepherd and Roxa Lana Ray. She married Sidney Tanner, December 1, 1846, at the age of 17. Sidney Tanner was a recent widower with six children. In the year of 1846 Sidney had buried 2 of his young children and his wife. Julia Ann inherited the remaining six step-children some who were only a few years younger than herself. When they reached the Salt Lake Valley, Julia Ann was 21 years old.

Julia Ann's father had gone from Salt Lake to Southern California and when the Saints were called to settled San Bernardino several of the Tanner brothers where called to go - including Sidney and Julia Ann. The Tanner's were freighters and often called upon by the church to help move people and/or merchandise. They later left the state and returned to Utah settling in Beaver.

They had the following children: Julia Ann in 1848, Albert Miles in 1850, Henry Martin in 1852, Naomi Ruth in 1854, Samuel A. in 1857, Shepherd LeRoy in 1859, Rollin Ray in 1861, and Walter W. in 1863.
