About Julia Cuniberti

CUNIBERTI JULIA CUNIBERTI On February 8, in Riverdale, NY. A life of love, learning, and service. A native Washingtonian, Julia Cuniberti was born December 13, 1923. In the early 1930s her family lived in Europe for several years. In this period she attended elementary school in Paris and the Lycee Chateaubriand in Rome. When her family returned to Washington in 1936 she attended the Madeira School in McLean, Virginia. In 1939 while she and her father were traveling in Europe, the two barely escaped from France when war broke out and all the frontiers were closed. After graduating from Madeira in 1940, Julia went on to Vassar College. During her college years she spent a summer in Mexico City studying the leading painters of the country. Graduating Vassar in 1944, she joined the wartime Office of Strategic Services. Her OSS service began in Washington but included assignments in London, Wiesbaden, Bern, and Vienna. After the war Julia returned to Washington and civilian life, working as an illustrator for the peacetime agency that had been the OSS. She also studied at the Corcoran Gallery School of Art. Subsequently she began a practice in freelance graphic design, which occupied her for many years. Later she began teaching elementary-grade art in the District of Columbia public schools. She was known for her "road show", traveling from school to school with hand puppets and a folding theater she had built for them, encouraging pupils to make their own hand puppets. Julia was active in many local organizations, including the National Capital Area YWCA, the local League of Women Voters, the AAUW, the Vassar Club of Washington, the Washington Press Club, and the Sulgrave Club. In this deep civic engagement and benevolence she followed the example of her mother Julia Lovejoy Cuniberti. In recent years she was a member of Dupont Circle Village. She was a longtime member of Third Church of Christ, Scientist at 16th and Eye Streets NW in Washington. She was an enthusiastic supporter of all the arts, and of opera and theater most notably. Julia was predeceased by her brothers Vittorio, Mario, and John. Surviving are her brother, Roberto, of Los Angeles, and many adoring nieces and nephews, together with a large extended family. She will be remembered by family and friends as a warm, generous and loving individual. She believed ardently in equal rights and opportunities for all people, and demonstrated it over the years in many ways. Memorials have been private. Offerings or remembrances in her name may be directed to Third Church of Christ, Scientist, P.O. Box 66804. Washington, DC 20035, or to any of the service organizations listed above to which she belonged.Memorials have been private. This family photo is called "The Three Julias". Julia Isbell Stowe Lovejoy, Julia Susan Lovejoy Cuniberti (her daughter), and Julia Cuniberti (her granddaughter).

Thank you to Patty and to Holly for sharing this photo of my great great aunt Julia and her daughter and granddaughter. I was fortunate to meet little Julia decades later in Washington DC, where she lived. I lived nearby in Alexandria, Virginia, but was unaware of cousin Julia until my mother visited from California and we set off to visit Julia, who in her 80s then was an amazing, lively, intelligent, well-educated woman!
