About Juliet Maryon Caulfield

Best known for her portrayal as "magical" governess Phoebe Figalilly in the ‘70s sitcom The Nanny and the Professor, Juliet Mills went on to win an Emmy for her performance as the wife of Anthony Hopkins in the 1973 miniseries QB VII. Mills continued to appear in television and theatre, and from 1999 until 2008, she played a continuing role in the daytime drama series Passions, and was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for her work.

The actress was born on November 21, 1941 in London, England to John Mills and Mary Hayley Bell. She was the goddaughter of Vivian Leigh. Mills's father was an actor while her mother was a playwright. Mills had two siblings, Hayley and Jonathan. Both would have a career in show business.

Mills made her film debut at just eleven months old in the war drama, In Which We Serve with her father. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards including, "Best Picture". At six years of age, Mills starred again with her father in the films, So Well Remembered as well as the mystery, The October Man.

Two years later, Mills starred in the film drama, The History of Mr. Polly. In 1960, she starred in the television movie, Mrs. Miniver with Maureen O'Hara. The following year brought about the independent film, No My Darling Daughter with James Westmoreland. That same year, Mills married songwriter, Russ Alquist , Jr. The marriage lasted three years and produced one son, Sean. In 1962, Mills appeared in the film comedy, Twice Round the Daffodils with Jill Ireland. She also starred in television such as, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1965), Ben Casey (1966), A Man Called Shenandoah (1966) and Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre (1966, 1967).

In 1966, Mills starred in the western, The Rare Breed with James Stewart and Maureen O'Hara. Four years later, she appeared in the television series, Nanny and the Professor which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. In 1972, Mills starred in the romantic comedy film, Avanti! with Jack Lemmon which earned her a second Golden Globe nomination. Two years later she starred in the television mini series QB VII with Ben Gazzara and Anthony Hopkins. Mills's performance earned her an Emmy.

Several roles in television ensued such as, Hawaii Five-O (1975), Ellery Queen (1976), Wonder Woman (1977), Switch (1978), Police Woman (1978), Fantasy Island (1978) and The Love Boat (1978, 1979). In 1980 Mills starred in episodes of Dynasty (1984), All My Children (1985), Murder, She Wrote (1987) and Monsters (1990). In 1992, Mills starred with her sister Hayley, in the play Fallen Angels and toured Australia and New Zealand. In 1999, Mills appeared in the film drama, The Other Sister with Juliette Lewis, Diane Keaton, Tom Skerritt and Giovanni Ribisi. That same year, Mills won the role of Tabitha Lenox on the soap opera, Passions which earned her a 2005 nomination from the Daytime Emmy Awards.

Personal Life

From 1961 to 1964, Mills was married to Russell Alquist, Jr., with whom she had a son, Sean. In 1975 she married Michael Miklenda, with whom she had a daughter, Melissa, before divorcing him in 1980. In 1980, Mills married the 18-years-younger Maxwell Caulfield. Mills said of the age difference, "Everybody is always interested in the fact that I am married to someone who is a lot younger than I am ... There are no rules, and that's what I believe, because age doesn't really matter. If you meet someone that you're really close to, someone that you love, stick with that." Caulfield adopted Mills's daughter by her second husband, and the couple live in southern California.
