The eldest of 4 brothers (1 pre-deceased him), Julek died on March 4th 1942 on the Avenue Pasteur, Aix en Provence whilst an inmate of Camp des Milles the internment camp in the village of Milles about 3 miles from Aix. The circumstances are unclear but this is apparently the convention for saying that someone died in Aix hospital - although the camp had its own infirmary. He had escaped earlier but returned apparently voluntarily after failing to find sanctuary. One version of events is that he was punished by being starved to death but this doesn't explain the circumstances of his death. The Camp des Milles remains as a monument to the dead; their web site is illuminating but doesn't offer individual tracing. The glass factory in Haidemuhl was owned by his mother's family, the Schillers, who were very influential in the town.
