He was the oldest son of Charles Land, a planter, and Sarah Bass. He moved with his parents when he was an infant to northern Alabama, and when he was fourteen years old to Yazoo County, Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Virginia, to which he rode on horseback and spent more than a month doing it.. He obtained a license to practice law in 1837. Having inherited a great deal of money, he never practiced his profession regularly until he moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1846, with his wife Mary E. Dillingham. The union was blessed with fourteen children.
In 1854 he was elected a judge to Shreveport and four year later was elevated to the supreme court of Louisiana.
