Brief overview:

Karel (59), of Oorsaak Smallholding, Kroondal, NW was ambushed and shot dead, on 26th August 2003. Karel was found dead by his wife Lena outside his homestead, around 05h30, on Wednesday 27th August 2003, on their smallholding 'Oorsaak' in Kroondal, NW. From the footprints and the other evidence at the scene, police suspect that he was ambushed upon his arrival home late on Tuesday-evening, said Police capt. David Serepa. He was lying between his car and the front door. His revolver and a spent cartridge were found. Police could find no exit wound from a bullet and aren't sure at this stage whether he was shot or stabbed with an iron spike, which was found near the scene. Nothing was stolen and nobody has been arrested.

  • Karel's attack was the second that week. In the previous attack, Ahmed Jalalpor (52), a well-known businessman from Broederstroom, and his family were attacked on Sunday evening on their small holdings in the Hartbeespoortdam area. He and his wife, Freda (52), and their daughter, Jasmin (21), were detained in their home and of two firearms, robbed of cash, cell phones and a wristwatch
