-----------------------------Black Mountain issue-----------------------------------------
one of the people helping to look up thing about karen Tobine Mortensdatter came up with a few ideas about where the term Black Mountain came from. Here they are:
That is one possibility, but there is Svartfjellet near E39 east of Mandal and west of Kristiansand S. which look like a very likely candidate too. On the map it looks like Haugåsen at 180 meter above sea level is higher, so it isn't exactly a very tall mountain.
Svartfjellet means: Svart= black and fjell= mountain
Svartefjellet in Søgne is here:
http://kart.finn.no/index.jsp?lng=7.70285&lat=58.10075&tab=&zoom=15
I wrote and got a reply of:
I think this makes the most sense, as Svarte means Black and jfell
means mountain, and it's in sogne. I think I will go with this. But,
my question is now; do I give up the Vest-Agder part of it and put in
Svartefjellet instead?
Carol
I would not pick one or the other, but all of them. I would write it as:
Svartefjellet, Søgne, Vest Agder, Norway.

Hi,
Here is the marriage between Elias Sørensen and Karen Thobine Mortensdatter. They married in Søgne in April 25th 1877, not in *1873*! Elias born 1847, Karen Thobine born 1852.
Note that Thobine is written different ways. For the most "Tobine".
Elias Sørensen is first recorded as "enkemann" (widower), but that is rectify to "ungk." (=ungkarl = bachelor). The grooms fathers name is Søren Jacobsen.

Carol,
This must be your Tobena in census 1900, then she live as widow in Eide municipality. The census state what I suspect that your Amercan Aleis is identical to Norwegian Elias.
