BIOGRAPHY Karl, Graf zu Waldeck und Pyrmont, was born on 17 November 1778 in Bergheim, Waldeck, and was baptised there the same day, the second son of Josias, Graf zu Waldeck-Bergheim, and Christine, Gräfin zu Ysenburg und Büdingen in Büdingen.
On 16 April 1819, Wilhelm I, King of Württemberg, elevated Karoline Schilling von Canstadt to the rank of Countess. This enabled her, on 25 April 1819 at Schwarzenhopf, to be regarded 'ebenbürtig' and marry Karl. They became the parents of three daughters and three sons.
Karl had inherited the castle Bergheim which, in 1669, had been built by his great-grandfather Christian Ludwig. However the building had exceedeed greatly the available money, and family silver had been pawned to Jewish money lenders. It was Karl's wife, Karoline, who through her frugality had been able to retrieve the family silver.
Karl died 21 January 1849 at Bergheim in Waldeck, and Karoline died there on 7 October 1866.
