About Karl Erik Erickson

ACCIDENT NO. 52 - September 15, 1910 - Charles Erickson, Red Jacket Shaft, C.&H. Charles Erickson died in the C. & H. hospital on this day from injuries received on August 30th, 1910, at the 57th level of the Red Jacket Shaft.

An inquest was held over his body and the following witnesses examined:

Andrew Jetta: "Chas Erickson was my partner. I am a miner; I was working with him at the time of the accident at the 57th level. It was about five minutes after one and we were going to our place of work up the stope about 70 ft. He started up with some drills. When up about 20 feet. I missed his light and went to look for him and found him down in the level. I heard no sound from him after his light was gone. I called "Charlie, Charlie" but got no answer. I went to look for him and found his "shiner," there was a rock on it, farther down I found him lying in the level, the 57th. I do not know what struck him. Did not see any rock in the stope. We did not blast before we went to dinner, my partner blasted in the morning. The rock on his hat weighed about 20 pounds, I should say. I could see no place where this rock came from, it was an old rock, it did not look as if it had broken away recently; it looked like it was out of an old hanging. It may have been on a timber and got knocked off."

James Seal: "Was working at the same level at time Charley got hurt. I am a timberman. I was about 20 feet away when he fell. I heard the drills fall, but thought nothing of it. I smiled to think of his gathering them all up again. I supposed he had slipped off the solar, but as I say I thought nothing serious of it until his partner came and said, Charley was lying in the level. Then went and picked up his "shiner" and put it to one side, as I thought the Mine Inspector would like to see it. I do not know what caused Charley to fall. The stope was quite steep. I helped examine the ground with Inspector Dawe and the Captain, but we could find no place where the rock came from. It was an old rock covered with dust."

Verdict: "We find, that Charles Erickson came to his death on the 15th day of September, 1910, by a fracture of the skull, received while at work at the 57th level, Red Jacket Shaft, branch of the C.&H. Mining Company, Aug. 30, 1910."
