BIOGRAPHY Karl, Graf Vitzthum von Eckstädt, was born on 6 October 1879 in Berlin, the son of Alexander, Graf Vitzthum von Eckstädt, and Helene von Mayer.

On 11 June 1911 in Dresden, Karl married Elisabeth von Haugk, daughter of Philipp von Haugk and Charlotte von Tietzen-Hennig. They became the parents of three sons. Karl achieved the rank of colonel in the German army.

From 1939 to 1945 there existed a World War Two prisoner-of-war camp (Stalag IV-B) near Mühlberg an der Elbe.About 300,000 prisoners passed through the camp and about 3,000, most of then Soviet soldiers, died there. After the war, the camp was re-used by the Soviet secret service NKVD as NKVD Special Camp no.1. About 6,700 of the 22,000 prisoners of the NKVD are buried in mass graves near the camp area. Today a memorial area remembers the victims of both camp periods.

Karl, Graf Vitzthum von Eckstädt, died in this camp on 24 October 1946.
