Karl Joseph Gotthard von Firmian, italienisch Carlo Gottardo Firmian (* 6. August 1716 in Mezzocorona bei Trient, damals Tirol; † 20. Juli 1782 in Mailand) war ein Südtiroler Adliger, Kunstsammler und Politiker sowie Österreichischer Generalgouverneur der Lombardei.

Carl Joseph Graf von Firmian, Neffe des Salzburger Erzbischofs Leopold Anton von Firmian, erhielt seine Bildung zu Erthal, Innsbruck, Salzburg und auf der Universität Leiden, sodann auf Reisen in Frankreich und Italien.

Nach der Thronbesteigung Franz I. kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und wurde von Maria Theresia 1753 als österreichischer Gesandter nach Neapel und 1756 als bevollmächtigter Minister nach der Lombardei gesandt. In diesem seit 1535 Habsburgischen Herzogtum gelang Firmian im Kompromiss mit jungen Reformern eine Verwaltungsreform, die vom Wiener Diplomaten Joseph von Sperges vermittelt wurde. Als Mann der Aufklärung drängte er den geistlichen Einfluss zurück, errichtete Bibliotheken und förderte Wissenschaft und Künste, so als Gönner und Freund von Johann Joachim Winckelmann und Angelika Kauffmann.

Firmian starb am 20. Juli 1782 in Mailand. Er hinterließ eine Bibliothek von 40.000 Bänden und kostbare Kunstsammlungen. Das Geschlecht erlosch im Mannesstamm mit Karl Leopold Max (1760-1831), Graf von Firmian, Fürsterzbischof von Wien.

Joseph Karl Gotthard von Firmian, Italian Carlo Gottardo Firmian (born 6 August 1716 in Mezzocorona on Trent, then Tyrol; † July 20, 1782 in Milan) was a Tyrolean nobleman, politician and art collector as well as Austrian governor-general of Lombardy.

Carl Joseph von Firmian, nephew of Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, received his education at Erthal, Innsbruck, Salzburg and at the University of Leiden, then to travel to France and Italy.

After the accession of Francis I, he returned to Germany in 1753 by Maria Theresa, Austrian ambassador to Naples in 1756 and sent as minister plenipotentiary to Lombardy. In this Habsburg Duchy since 1535 Firmian succeeded in Compromise with young reformers administrative reform, which was mediated by the Vienna diplomat Joseph Sperges. As a man of the Enlightenment, he pushed back his spiritual influence, built libraries and promoted science and arts, as patron and friend of Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Angelica Kauffmann.

Firmian died on 20 July 1782 in Milan. He left a library of 40,000 volumes and priceless art collections. The gender of the male line died out with Charles Leopold Max (1760-1831), Count of Firmian, Archbishop of Vienna.
