About Karl Kaldas

New Australian Accidentally
Burned To Death
The A.C.i;. Coroner, Mr. F. C.
P. Keane, yesterday found that
Karl Kaldas, an Estonian mig-
rant, died from suffocation and
burns received from a fire which
started accidentally inside the
hut in which he was living.
Kaldas' body was found
among the remains of one of two
wooden huts destroyed by fire
at K. Schriener's depot in Lons-
dale Street, Braddon, on March
2. 1953.
'Sergeant H. F. Luton told the
Coroner that he arrived at the
fire at 10.20 p.m. The centre
hut in a row of three was burn-
ing fiercely. The fire, fanned by
a westerly breeze, was spread-
ing to an adjoining hut.
After the fire had been brought
under control by the Canberra
Fire Brigade, the severely-burnt
body of a man was found in a
kneeling position in one corner
of the hut.
A search among the ruins of
the hut revealed a wallet con-
taining the personal papers of
Karl Kaldas, who had occupied
the hut, before beginning work
the next day.
Luton said the body had been
identified by finger prints, Al-
though the fingers were badly
burned, they were covered with
a burned cloth and the finger-
prints were discernible.
Four fingers had been ampu-
tated from the body and sent
down to the Central Fingerprint
Bureau in Sydney ..
There they were positively iden-
tified as those of Karl Kaldas,
who had been arrested on two
occasions.
Dr. B. W. Monohan said there
was no direct evidence as to the
cause of death, but appearances
were consistent with suffocation.
There was enough alcohol in
the bloodstream for a man to bo
under the Influence of intoxicat-
ing liquor.
Acting chief fire officer C. P.
Holdon said that after the fire
had been controlled three New
Australians who lived m the ad-
joining huts told him there was
a man-inside the burnt-out hut.
IFrom these New Australians
he had learned that Kaldas'.was
a smoker, and used candles for
lighting his hut.
Esperitio Blasi, labourer, who
lived in an adjoining hut, said
that on the night ol' the fire
Kaldas appeared to be in a "joy-
ful" mood, but he was not drunk.
When the fire broke out Blasi
opened the door of Kaldas's hut,
but the flames prevented him
from entering it. He had not
heard anyone call out during
the fire from inside the hut.
