About Karl Strauch, Dr. phil.
KARL STRAUCH, Jf '53, Leverett Professor of physics emeritus, died January 3 in Boston. He was the former director of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator and former chairman of the physics department. A high-energy physicist, he led experiments that produced the first evidence of the existence of elementary particles called quarks; he was also an influential participant in the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Joint Coordinating Committee on Fundamental Properties of Matter, which served as the chief conduit between the American and Soviet scientific communities during the height of the Cold War. In 1975 he chaired the committee that recommended the merger of the Harvard and Radcliffe admissions offices and the institution of an admissions policy of equal access for women.
