Source: Michael Jewel 17 Mar 2015 Attached is some information on our von Buchenroeder ancestors which I've just sent to Deon [Gideon Knobel]. I have it largely from Roland Buchenroeder of Erfurt, a distant cousin, since deceased, whom I met about 13 years ago. It is a fine tale, complete with ghost stories, scandalous affairs, family feuds and bloody adventures. Ghost stories aside, I think it is all true, although Roland did not specify the sources of his information in any detail. This is my summary of Roland's materials, which were in German, together with some additional material which I found on the internet regarding the Baron's activities in South America.

Karl Friedrich Joseph Freiherr von Bouchenroeder (also referred to as Karl Philipp, and apparently baptised Karl Joseph Phillip. His wife was also referred to as Johanna Maria) Born in Eppelsheim on 8 May 1729 and baptised there on 12 May 1729. One of his godfathers was the Kurfurst and Pfalzgraf Joseph Karl Emmanuel. Married Josephine/ Johanna Maria von Heyles on 8 Sept 1757 in the Lutheran church in Alzey.

Captain in the Prussian army. He was probably involved in the 7 years war (1756-1763) during which Fredrick the Great fought off a concerted effort by Russia, France, Austria, Saxony and Sweden to annihilate Prussia. While he kept the French busy the British snapped up Canada and India, thus ensuring the dominance of English.

He was sentenced to death by the Kriminalgericht Mannheim for killing a Jewish money-lender named Seligmann in a duel. It was illegal for noblemen to fight duels against commoners. As a nobleman the Pfalzer Kurfiirst accorded him the dubious privilege of being beheaded with a sword rather than hanged. He was executed on 21 March 1767.

[He was led in support of 3 pastors in a wage carriage to the place and touches on special kurfurstliche mercy of any dishonest hands. His body was placed in a coffin and buried in a churchyard ordinary allhier and in silence. He died with Christian serenity and a generosity of spirit that has been admired by all people. He left behind a wife betrubte with 2 children."]

His wife, Josephine Maria von Heyles was left, at the age of 34, to look after their 2 surviving children (a third child died young). These were Friedrich and Wilhelmine.

I refer to the text which I found in the Archives of the City of Mannheim about Carl Friedrichs´execution in Mannheim. A cousin of mine, who works with the University Library of Göttingen, transcribed the old manuscript to modern letters. Please find his transcription attached. According to this transcription, Carl Friedrich did NOT have a duel with a jewish moneylender. The reason for his execution was that he killed a peasant who - with other peasants - cropped the fruits of a field which belonged to the Buchenroeders´ Family. The peasants did not steal the fruits, but had been officially commissioned by the community of Eppelsheim to harvest the field because Carl and his Brother Franz had taken away fruits from another field which they did not own. When the peasants arrived in the field, Carl Friedrich forced them to flee, threatening them with this gun. All peasants fled except one farmer which Carl killed with the bayonet which he had put on his gun. The execution took place on 21st of May, 1764 and not (as reported) 1767.
I hope that this information will help us all to understand the history of the Buchenroeders´ Family resp. the old times.
